Defining Trauma

What is considered a traumatic experience? The American Psychological Association (APA) defines trauma as “an emotional reaction to a terrible event.” Examples of traumatic events include but aren’t limited to the following.

  • Sudden death of a loved one
  • A physical illness affecting you or someone close to you (e.g., having a parent with cancer)
  • Growing up with a parent or caregiver with a serious mental illness or substance use disorder
  • Experiencing or witnessing violence.
  • Emotional or physical neglect
  • Any type of abuse
  • Sexual assault.
  • Car accidents
  • Natural disasters
  • Human trafficking
  • Racial trauma
  • Bullying
  • Stalking
  • War

These are not the only circumstances that count as a traumatic event or experience. If trauma is prolonged or repeated, it is called complex trauma. People facing complex trauma may have what is called complex post-traumatic stress disorder, which can come with additional and more severe symptoms.

The bottom line is that if any traumatic or stressful event affects your mind, body, or life, you deserve to get help for it. However, not everyone realizes how much past trauma impacts their current daily life or well-being. Here are some signs and symptoms of trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to look out for.

  • Re-experiencing symptoms: Flashbacks, nightmares, recurring memories, or distressing thoughts related to the traumatic event (some people may experience physical reactions, such as a rapid heartbeat, sweating, or shaking).
  • Avoidance symptoms: Avoiding people, places, or things that remind you of the traumatic event or avoiding feelings or thoughts related to the traumatic event.
  • Mood and cognition-related symptoms: Difficulty feeling positive emotions, trouble remembering key features of a traumatic event, loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed, disproportionate blame, guilt, or shame toward yourself or others, negative thoughts about yourself, others, or the world, or social isolation and feeling detached from other people.
  • Arousal and reactivity symptoms: Being startled more easily than others, hypervigilance, difficulty concentrating or focusing (not due to other causes), risky or self-destructive behaviors, irritability or anger, or sleep disturbance.

Many people who have been through trauma face additional symptoms, too. For example, trouble trusting themselves or developing healthy trust with other people, difficulty regulating emotions, dissociative symptoms, and physical health concerns such as gastrointestinal issues, chronic pain, headaches, or fatigue.

Our approach to dual-diagnosis

Dual Diagnosis Treatment & Los Angeles Trauma Therapy

If you have a substance use disorder and experience trauma or any other co-occurring mental health concern(s), dual diagnosis treatment is essential. Research shows that dual-diagnosis treatment leads to better outcomes, such as an improved quality of life, for people experiencing both substance use and co-occurring mental health concerns. By treating trauma and substance use comprehensively, we ensure that no parts of your story are missed.

The mental health professionals at BEST Luxury Recovery Center are trauma-informed and here to help you or your loved one heal. Here’s a little bit about what to expect in dual-diagnosis treatment for trauma and addiction at BEST Luxury Recovery Center.

Without appropriate medical supervision, getting off of drugs and alcohol can be dangerous. Unfortunately, at-home detox can even be life-threatening in some cases. Medical detox helps you achieve physical stability in a safe environment. Incoming clients at BEST Luxury Recovery Center may need to attend medical detox at our center before entering our inpatient therapy program if they are actively using substances. Usually, medical detox lasts for about one week or less.

During the day, clients in our inpatient program participate in groups, individual therapy sessions, and other activities. BEST Luxury Recovery Center will help you build a custom treatment plan for trauma healing. Our providers combine evidence-based therapy methods and supportive holistic treatments to help you regulate your nervous system and learn other important skills that will help you in your daily life long after treatment is over. For example, behavioral therapies, motivational therapies, breathwork, meditation, fitness, and art therapy.

The suites at our facility feel like a home–not a rehab center. Clients staying at our inpatient facility enjoy our relaxing environment, spacious bedrooms and bathrooms, chef-prepared meals, and other amenities, such as a fitness room and an in-ground swimming pool.

Before you leave BEST Luxury Recovery Center, we’ll help you make an aftercare plan to aid your continued trauma recovery. Healing from trauma is a continuous process, but it is an extremely rewarding one. Your aftercare work will be unique to you and your needs but may include:

  • A structured outpatient treatment program (we can provide referrals).
  • Therapy in a private practice or office setting.
  • Job and education planning or re-entry.
  • Support groups.

One of the benefits of choosing BEST Luxury Recovery Center is our alumni program. The alumni program at BEST Luxury Recovery Center helps former clients stay connected to and continue getting support from our staff members, as well as our thriving alumni community. Having secure and stable bonds with other people can be incredibly healing for those in trauma recovery–we’re here for you from your first phone call to BEST Luxury Recovery Center to aftercare planning and beyond.

Client Reviews

Testimonials From Our Clients

From the techs who became some of my best friends there to the therapist and each group facilitator. The quality was top notch. The chef took such good care of us and everything was delicious. The house and private rooms were really comfortable and peaceful. Everyone really cared and wanted each client to succeed. Thank you to everyone there and for helping me get my life back.

Great staff really make a difference. I've gone through other treatment centers before this one feels like home people really care and have your back even after you leave. Location is beautiful amenities are great and some of the best facilitators I've ever worked with . management and owners are fantastic and personable and will bend over backwards to make sure you have the best recovery possible

The best rehab facility I’ve ever went to my entire life the staff was absolutely incredible. And the facility is so beautiful it’s so relaxing and the food is so exquisite. The owners of the facility truly care about each client individually and are some of the best people I’ve ever met. Thank you for everything y’all did for me.
Salvador C.
I never realized they had treatment centers, like this. Food is a ten, house is a ten, and the recovery is a ten. . The house is a mansion, no chores, cooking, cleaning or anything, just focus on recovery. The house is nothing compared to the staff, that run it. The most compassionate people, who understand this disease better than anyone I've been around.

While in detox, I had the most attentive care from the nurses and staff which meant the world to me. This was my first (and hopefully last) rehab experience and I don't think I could've asked for anything better. They have private chefs, excellent group sessions, top of the line doctors, therapists, and social workers. Yes, this is a place to get off of substances, but it's so much more... You can actually fix yourself here.
Dashe H.
From the walking into the doors to my final days in the facility, all of my needs were not only met but exceeded. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and caring. Most of which are in long term recovery, which is comforting as well. From therapy to extracurricular activities, I was always engaged and learning more about how to get my life back on track. Meals curated by the chef were above anything I could’ve expected. And the estate itself is breathtaking.
